One of the universal criteria that we consciously adopted as a pillar to stand this
Campaign against an executive, elected mayor in Tower Hamlets has been the universal
Evidence of how anti-democratic persons have behaved in power-claiming offices across
The ages and across nationality, ethnicity and similar limits and boundaries.
The second, related criterion has been the evidential truth that more often than not,
autocratic personality flaws expand at a faster rate when allegedly representing
relatively impoverished and deprived populations.
The third has been the equally universally evident truth that when a power-prone
personality is put in post without the existence of an active tradition in the given locality
of a rigorous culture of democratic debate and accountability that is demonstrably
founded on undeniable record that the democratic audit was in fact allowed to take
place and that no installed titular head was immune from accountability then the
amount of damage and disaster are considerably and some generational terms
irreparably higher.
For these universally tenable reasons that we have established, we set up the
BHANGEELAAR! Campaign in the way that we have done and it is along the same lines
47 of 48 29/10/2010 12:54
that we shall maintain our legal, lawful, constitutional, ethical movement for the
realisation of democratic practices by Tower Hamlets Council notwithstanding the
deviation from that objective that may be inferred in the majority of the ‘mainstream’
blogs, comments and ‘journalism’ including those via the Guardian online and the
Guardian media group as a whole.
