BHANGEELAAR! Historic contextual update about the campaign for housing rights in Tower Hamlets [and in Camden] as posted this evening on the Guardian's Dave Hill's London Blog:
· Dave, one of the evidential bases for our campaigning against an executive mayor in Tower Hamlets has been the fact that in 1987, barely a year after they first got elected [May 1986] to run Tower Hamlets Council the then ‘Liberal FOCUS Team’ found themselves at the centre of a most sensational row. One of the actions that we - the volunteers NOT candidates for any office - in the community took in 1987 was to attempt to draw their attention to the fact that proposing to deport people from the borough because of housing needs was no way to show that the Council was serving the people.
· About the same time, the Camden Council was also making proposals that were analogous to those being mooted by the newly installed Party on Tower Hamlets council. In Tower Hamlets, the outrage was felt because the evidence was that those needing Council housing came at that time from the UK Bangladeshi community, widely known to be among the most deprived parts of the inner cities populations in the 1980s...
· In Camden, as the Guardian at the time was accurately reporting, those affected by the then Camden Council’s internal deportation proposals OVER HOUSING were identifiable as from the Irish community. The evidence showed – and will still show in 2010- that like the Bangladeshis, the Irish continue to have unmet needs in the inner cities areas. Those assaults were taking place in 1987.
· That was 23 years ago and the UK central Govt was still very much in thrall to the likes of Norman Tebbit. Now, 23 years on, the central Govt in the UK is again in thrall to the same sort of characters. Only that the names have changed. Instead of the name being an ordinary sound two part one, they can be genuinely intimidating with their double-barrelled intentions. IDS can and does represent the Irreparably Draconian Storming of the already disenfranchised in economic and social terms and in the current context of the assault by propaganda, democratic terms too.
· As for the central Government’s slogans used in the attacks on the already violated parts of society, where Tebbit had said bike, IDS says bus! How cruelly deceptive, false, dishonest, ill-briefed, ill-advised the Granada TV’s over-hyped flaunting of Nick Clegg as frothily fronted by the ITV’s contribution to the demeaning of democratic discourse in Britain must look and feel now.
· As for the tag of ‘saint’ that even the Mail on Sunday had attached to Vincent Cable, what are the conceivers of the marketing slogans now going to devise to truthfully and democratically accountably report the wanton betrayal taking place daily under CONDEM regime of all the best wishes that Cable had been showered with? Democracy is not a peripheral matter and the sooner the local councils REVERSE any plans to go down the dictatorial way that you have reported the better.
· Big Society! How horribly cruel ‘Dave’ Cameron sounds now in playback and in rehearsal for the almost unending releases of excuses for destroying society! Bullingdon should now be permanently updated to read bullying the poor, bullying the vulnerable, bullying the victims of Society’s abusers occupying positions of power obtained by alleged expression of legitimacy at the polling booth. Bullingdon is Bullying on!
