BHANGEELAAR! is TELLING Lutfur Rahman at Tower Hamlets Council that he may find his secret entourage sinking him at a faster speed than even he had got used to imagining could happen…...
BHANGEELAAR! is part of the campaign, the movement that has defended the community over the past 50 years. It is for this reason that we have been campaigning against the departure from the [admittedly inadequate existing] democratic structure of the Tower Hamlets Council.
Why do we maintain that getting any individual into a publicly paid for and resourced post with executive and elected powers now being referred to as ‘the executive elected mayor’ in a place like Tower Hamlets is a regressive step?
Why do we maintain that this will end in tears sooner rather than later?
Why do we say that this will set back the course of democratic accountability for the people back by years, decades?
The answer is provided by the evidence we have been observing over the past ten days of the behaviour of several relevant outfits that have gone into overdrive in their bid to capture what appear to be some very important goods. To them at any rate. Literally the goods that come with the reputedly £1billion budget and the allegedly equally influential ‘clout’ that the postholder can wield, throw around and display ‘in the neighbourhood’!
Things are moving in the very undemocratic, unaccountable, unethical and irresponsible direction that we had been accurately predicting since 4 January 2010 when our movement got involved in the campaign against an elected mayor in Tower Hamlets.
We can confirm that whatever title he may prefer to give himself, Lutfur Rahman is now the target of too many of the undesirable elements that can only spell disaster for his ‘aims’.
Who is Lutfur Rahman?
Answer: It is the same individual who has been the main beneficiary identified as the victim of injustice by the Labour Party bureaucracy. As such he has been “the positive centre of the local community’s [electoral and other, more important] expressions of outrage dated and linked to 21 October 2010”. From that date on, he has also been surrounded by the kind of locust-like elements that can drain all lifeblood out of him even before he can make any half decent legitimate announcement that can really address the needs and the interests of the ordinary people of Tower Hamlets. If he is not very alert and very honest.
On Friday 29 October 2010, we gave Lutfur Rahman another opportunity to address some very serious issues of the community in the context of the attacks that were being mounted against the community by using him as the conduit to justify those attacks. Lutfur Rahman made another promise that he would meet us after 2 weeks. He said he was at present defending his position against attacks that were coming from his opponents.
That was the latest promise he has made.
The previous occasions were 18 October 2010, 14 September 2010, 10 May 2010, 06 May 2010 and 26 January 2006.
On each of those occasions, Lutfur Rahman said he would contact us and sit down and go over the outstanding issues affecting the community in the context of his being on the local Tower Hamlets Council on the claim that he was there to serve the local community by the decisions that he was making over the allocation of the resources that were only available to him to decide on in.
He has not made the contacts.
He has not sat down with us.
We are publishing this update in accordance with our established practice in voluntary compliance with the requirements of the universal codes of ethics, transparency, accountability and democracy.
We shall refer to this in context as being part of our transparent contribution to the movement for the democratisation of Tower Hamlets Council.
In view of the fact that Lutfur Rahman has in the past ten days been in secret sessions with groups and individuals discussing what he will or will not do with any powers that he may have over the public resources and the public amenities that actually are there for the people of Tower Hamlets we are making it very clear that our campaign against an elected executive mayor in Tower Hamlets will refer to all the evidence that we have obtained.
