Bhangeelaar! is based in London. Tower Hamlets is the local area we are defending democracy in. We are currently campaigning to stop the local [Tower Hamlets] Council constitution being altered in favour of an executive mayor being put in charge of the borough over the collective democratic diverse and constitutional say of all the elected councillors. This is a serious regressive backward step from a pro-democratic framework that currently exists in Tower Hamlets. The attempt to create an all-powerful post of mayor is a step towards what is most undesirable: autocracy. The overwhelming view of the people who have lived in Tower Hamlets for a long time is that this is a wrong thing to impose on our community. It will set the clock back by more than a century. We are asking voters in Tower Hamlets to VOTE ’NO’ on 6 May 2010 when the ‘referendum’ [a miniature one of course limited to the boundaries of the ‘London Borough of Tower Hamlets’] takes place. This coincides on the same date 6 May 2010with the UK general election and the local council election. However we are also backing democratic activities in other parts of London and elsewhere. The principles [and 'values' to use a trendy word over-sued by UK Gordon Brown and most confusingly being uttered increasingly by UK D Cameron] we seek to uphold include honesty, accountability, responsibility, equality, and have course universality. And humanity! Humanity is at the very heart of our efforts. Upholding humanity in an atmosphere of ‘local democracy’ which is the subject of being snatched away by a squad of Blairing intruders is what the battle in Tower Hamlets is about on this issue.
