Your ["East London Advertiser"] [online] report states

A council development committee approved the site for 12,333 sq. ft. of retail use in July 2008 and for 103,690 sq. ft. of student accommodation, including 339 bedrooms.
[Unquote].
As is almost always the case with Tower Hamlets Council’s behaviour, more questions arise than the Council can ever answer. What on earth were the “elected councillors” generally and the ones with the Whitechapel Ward responsibilities doing in July 2008 when the Tower Hamlets Council’s “development committee approved the site...”?
The record of councillors on Tower Hamlets Council over the past 20 years shows that they have played pliant roles – despite the odd, occasional publicity to show they are ‘sensitive’ to the votes that are never to be overlooked – in the take over of the East End borough by speculators, commercial manipulators and Big Biz assaults on the local community’s economic and sentimental space.
This had begun in the late 1980s and has gone on apace notwithstanding the overall economic depression in the inner cities. If you ["East London Advertiser"] examine the Council’s planning permissions profile, you will find that Tower Hamlets Council has been used as a stooged Council and its planning behaviour has gone on with in effect no scrutiny by the elected councillors.
This has been made even worse for the community by the controlling clique and bureaucracy in Tower Hamlets Council undermining the democratic campaigns and endeavours by the ordinary community.
The Borough [the ordinary people, as different from the bureaucracy of the Council - which on the facts has been consistently complicit with the speculators and anti-community 'developers'] has been the target of sustained robbery by commercial interests and Big Business and successive sets of “elected” councillors have failed the community on the whole on this.
You ["East London Advertiser"] could do a long overdue service to the cause of highlighting the blight that is being foisted on the East End by the type of planning policy that this particular item typifies if you investigated and reported on the roles played by various councillors and their “friends” in facilitating the economic assaults on the ordinary people in the area.
Given that Tower Hamlets Council is actively implementing the agenda of CONDEM CUTS, especially affecting housing, it is not a matter of if but when the same Council bureaucracy will be carrying out internal deportations of the involuntarily poor in Tower Hamlets.
That will show that the agenda being followed by the “development committee” was part of a wider economic agenda of deporting many of the families and individuals the people that make up the Borough… and not just of under cutting them by making their small shops redundant…
