Police probe claims of bogus voter registrations
(UKPA) Saturday 01 May 2010
Allegations of bogus voter registrations were being investigated by police after a last-minute flood of applications sparked suspicion.
Fictitious names were put on the electoral roll in Tower Hamlets after a surge of applications meant more than 5,000 were accepted without any checks, it was reported.
Scotland Yard confirmed it was investigating the allegations and working closely with the Electoral Commission.
A police spokeswoman said: "We are investigating allegations of electoral irregularities in Tower Hamlets. We are not going into details but suffice to say one of the allegations concerned false voter registrations.
"There have been no arrests so far but this is being assessed."
The Times reported that eight Bengalis claimed a postal vote in a maisonette in Bethnal Green Road, where only one occupant, Inge Reekmans, lived.
"You can see, there are no Bengalis," she told the newspaper.
